The Car Man

The Car Man brings a sharp-edged narrative and electrifying movement to the stage as a drifter arrives in a small American town and ignites passion, betrayal and revenge. On tour audiences will see powerful ensemble dance, striking staging reminiscent of film noir, and intense emotions played out without words but full of drama and menace.

First premiered in 2000, The Car Man marks one of Matthew Bourne’s most daring dance-theatre works. It uses a story loosely based on the opera Carmen and the novel The Postman Always Rings Twice, but re-imagined through Bourne’s own vision.

The production features music by Terry Davies based on Rodion Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite, and design by Lez Brotherston with lighting by Chris Davey. It originally won the Evening Standard Award for Musical Event of the Year and the Los Angeles Drama Critics Award for Best Choreography.
